Posted on: March 18th, 2018

In Chicagoland this time of year, we can’t wait to be around the warm summer sun. The long winter months can leave some of us feeling dry and pale. Did you know you can skip the tanning bed and spray tans and make a natural self tanner from scratch? As we count the days to glowing tan skin, here are a few DIY self tanner recipes you can try at home.

DIY Self Tanner Recipes

The Cocoa Recipe

Ingredients: Unscented white lotion and 100% Cocoa powder

Mix 1/3 cup of Cocoa with the unscented white lotion. Apply to skin and let absorb and dry completely. Use daily until desired color is reached.

The Tea Recipe

Ingredients: Black tea and unscented white lotion

Use approximately 4 black tea bags. Pour hot water over bags and let steep for 2-3 minutes. Let cool and mix 1/2 cup of black tea to 1 cup of unscented white lotion.

The Coffee Recipe

Ingredients: Caffeinated black coffee and unscented white lotion

Brew the caffeinated black coffee like usual. Mix desired color amount with lotion. *The caffeine is great for cellulite!

With the tea and coffee recipes, if you want to skip the lotion option, but the liquid mixture in a spray bottle and DIY spray tan is born. Always make sure to let dry.

Benefits of DIY self tanner

The harmful UV radiation can lead to premature skin aging (wrinkles, lax skin, brown spots, and more), as well as skin cancer. The benefits of using natural ingredients decrease the likelihood and will not wreak havoc on our skin.

10 tips to to quiet the mind with meditationWhether you are looking for more peace in your life or ways you can de-stress, meditation could be exactly what you need!

10 tips to quiet the mind with meditation

  1. Make time for meditation daily. Find the right time that will work for you and when you are able to fit it in daily.
  2. Find a quiet space. Consider having dim to no lights and diffuse essential oils to help your mind and body relax. For example Lavender oil can help you feel at ease.
  3. Find a relaxing position. During meditation it is important to find a position where your body can completely relax. Whether it is sitting ‘indian style’ or laying on your back, find what works for you!
  4. Close your eyes and breathe. Begin every practice by breathing deeply, slowly inhaling and then exhaling and focusing solely on your breath.
  5. Put on some relaxing music.
  6. Let go of all expectations. Do not have any expectations of what you need or want to happen. In the beginning, just learn how to quiet the mind and relax. There is no right or wrong when it comes to meditation.
  7. Be present throughout the day. Do not be concerned with what you should have done or what you still need to do during the day. Be completely present during each moment and it will helps silence any other thoughts or distractions.
  8. Turn off all electronics. No distractions!
  9. End your meditation slowly. When you are finished, do not stand up quickly. Ease yourself in standing up and opening your eyes. Let your body become aware of your surroundings and then slowly open your eyes.
  10. Stay committed. Stay the course and stay committed! Over time you will learn how to relax your mind and dive into a meditative state quicker with each practice.

Get Your Skin Spring Ready With These Tips

Posted on: February 21st, 2017

transition winter skin to springSpring is right around the corner and now is the perfect time to start transitioning your winter skincare routine!  Throughout the winter months our skin goes through different types of stresses such as strong winds and low moisture levels. This results in dry, dull skin. Luckily, spring is the perfect time to start to peel away the winter blues and brighten up your complexion. Below are some tips to prep your skin for spring.

  1. Ditch the foundation. Grab a tinted moisturizer with SPF instead of a heavy foundation.
  2. Add a serum to your skincare routine. A serum helps to repair skin, brighten and moisturize the skin.
  3. Switch to a light moisturizer. Winter calls for a heavier moisturizer to combat dry skin. Spring time however calls for a lighter moisturizer.
  4. Spritz toners. It is important to incorporate a toner into your skincare routine. A spritz toner can be used throughout the day to keep skin feeling clean and fresh.
  5. Exfoliate the skin. Erase dry, dull skin with the right exfoliator for spring. Find a product that contains a glycolic or lactic acid which will boost the skin’s cell turnover resulting in visibility brighter skin.
  6. Use a gentle cleanser. Harsh cleansers can irritate or dry out the skin. Instead, grab a gentle cleanser that will help balance the pH of the skin.
  7. Mask it up! Choosing a mask that keeps your skin feeling fresh is a great way to help keep a bright complexion. Here is a great DIY fresh face mask: Mix two tablespoons of honey, and two tablespoons of orange juice. Put on cleansed skin for 20 minutes. Rinse with cold water then moisturize.

Must Have Fall Makeup Trends

Posted on: September 22nd, 2016

fall beauty trends 2016Fall time is here which means fall makeup trends are certaintly on the rise. Lately, we are swooning over the latest fall makeup colors. With merlot and metallic color palettes complimented with peach tones, these trends were relevant during fashion week and are available in stores now.

  1. The Vampy Lip. The dark lips in colors like wine, dark purple and dark browns are in this fall season. Try it in both a matte and gloss.
  2. Glitter Effect. Glitter eyeliner and shadows are in for fall. With a simple line on your upper lid or lower lash line, create a sparkly look in seconds. For eyeshadow, try using a taupe color on the lid with a glitter gold overlay.
  3. Metallic Nails. Eggplant purple and gun metal gray are trending nail colors this fall season. Try Oribe The Lacquer in ‘The Violet’.
  4.  Smokey Eyes. Create a smokey eye using copper colors instead of the traditional black. Keep the lips in a neutral nude color to make the eyes pop.
  5. Just Peachy. A baked blush in a peachy pink sets the tone in this fall makeup trend. Use on the cheek and blend away. The peach colors are actually trending as a lip gloss as well.
  6. Dewy Skin. Add a highlighter to the high point of your cheek bones, along the brow bone, down the center of your nose and on your chin to create a highlighted, dewy look.
  7. Ruby Red Lips. Dorothy would be proud as the ruby red, sparkly lips are trending this fall. Keep the rest of the makeup neutral to create that pop of color.

Transition Your Skin From Summer To Fall

Posted on: August 14th, 2016

fall skinAs the summer months are quickly coming to a close, transitioning your skin from summer to fall is crucial in keeping your skin looking and feeling its best! A change in season can drastically change how the skin behaves. When it turns cooler in temperature, less oil is produced by the skin creating a change in your skincare routine. Below are some tips on how to transition your skin from summer to fall.

  • Change your cleansing routine. Choosing a cleanser that is more mild yet offers incredible hydration is the best choice for fall. A good rule is to choose a cleanser that is non-drying and sulfate-free.
  • Choose a heavier day time moisturizer. During the summer months using a light daytime moisturizer is ok because the skin produces more oil. When it is cooler outside, our skin tends to dry out. Choosing a heavier day time moisturizer will help prevent moisture loss.
  • Continue using SPF. During the fall months the UVA rays (the ones that cause skin cancer and premature wrinkles) are just as strong. Choosing a moisturizer that has an SPF is key to help protect your skin!
  • Exfoliate. To brighten and repair the skin during the fall months, exfoliation is imperative. This removes dead skin cells that trap oil. In return, exfoliating helps with acne and the overall appearance of skin.
  • Return to Retinol. Use a serum retinol or retinol moisturizer in your skincare routine. This helps reduce the appearance of brown spots and wrinkles caused by the summer sun.
  • Use an alcohol free toner. This step is usually overlooked when it comes to a skincare routine. After cleansing, use a toner to wipe the skin clean and immediately follow with a serum and moisturizer. This will help keep the skin moisturized and well cleansed!
