Managing Stress is not a Secret

Posted on: September 19th, 2018

Individuals differ dramatically in their response to a problem or a stressor. Some people are born with a temperament that predisposes them to higher or lower levels of tolerance to stress. Your cognitive reaction to a situation plays a role in determining how stressful a situation is to you. This reaction is characterized by your appraisal of the nature, importance and implications of the event, and by your ability to effectively manage or cope with the event.

Your emotional responses to a situation are determined by your appraisal of both the situation and your coping abilities, as well as your temperament. For example, if you tell yourself, “I can handle this,” you will have a completely different emotional response than if you say, “This is terrible. I’m going crazy.”

Experts have developed several explanations for why certain people respond more positively or negatively to stressors:

1. Our genetic makeup, which influences health and behavior. To some degree, it is human nature to feel stressed when we aren’t sure what to do or when faced with making a difficult or frustrating decision. And, some individuals may have a heightened level of arousal in the central nervous system, causing them to react more excitedly to events and adapt more slowly.

2. Experiencing something unusual or surprising causes stress. Researchers studying chimpanzees found that familiar and unfamiliar objects generally did not cause stress. But familiar objects shown in unfamiliar ways scared them. This reaction appeared to be innate; it was not based on a previous experience. In addition, half of all parents whose children are afraid of water report their children always had been fearful of the water; they had not had an initial traumatic experience that precipitated their anxiety.

3. Sometimes stress can lead to “positive reinforcement.” When we are feeling anxious, we may get attention or sympathy from our friends or family, for example. Attention or avoidance can reward us for our negative reactions.

4. Other psychological theories state that stress is born from internal conflicts, such as the struggle between our true or actual self and our ideal self, between unconscious views or needs or between our image of reality and actuality. For example, for the average student who wants to go on to a high-level college, taking entrance exams may be more stressful because he is unaware that he is putting pressure on himself to go beyond his own capabilities.

5. Past experience may color our view and how we interpret events, in turn determining our reactions and feelings. Anxiety, for example, may be a learned response to pain or mental discomfort. If you have one bad experience on a bumpy airline trip and then begin to expect that same level of discomfort on every trip, that expectation can color the future of your travels with a misinterpretation that all air travel is bad, even though it only happened once.

6. More recently, some psychologists have said we actually may “think or imagine ourselves into almost any emotional state.” We are not conditioned by our experiences in life to react a certain way; rather our inner thoughts determine our feelings and generate a sense of stress or calm. Those who catastrophize events or ask “what if” with an expectation of negative outcomes, without the data to determine whether their worries are true, add stress to their lives in situations that may or may not deserve a high level of emotional, cognitive or physiological responses. The Mind/Body Connection

Posted on: September 7th, 2017

mind/body connectionThe mind/body connection is so important when it comes to managing a balanced life. This means that our thoughts, feelings, beliefs, and attitudes can positively or negatively affect our biological functioning. In other words, our minds can affect how healthy our bodies are! On the other hand, what we do with our physical body (what we eat, how much we exercise, even our posture) can impact our mental state either positively or negatively. This results in a complex interrelationship between our minds and bodies.

According to Dr. James Gordon (founder of the Center for Mind-Body Medicine) “The brain and peripheral nervous system, the endocrine and immune systems, and indeed, all the organs of our body and all the emotional responses we have, share a common chemical language and are constantly communicating with one another.”

Here are some ways you can have a strong mind/body connection:

  1. Mediation
  2. Prayer
  3. Creative Arts
  4. Yoga
  5. Relaxation
  6. Support Groups
  7. Eat healthy
  8. Daily exercise
  9. Get enough sleep
  10. Laugh

Ways like meditation brings us home to the peace of present moment awareness and gives us an experience of  relaxation that eliminates fatigue and long-standing stresses. When you calm your mind, you can connect to your body. In return, taking care of your body can help feel your best from the outside in. Exercise not only helps keep the body young, but it also keeps the mind vital and promotes emotional wellbeing.

For all of our massage therapy and aesthetics students at USTA, we offer FREE meditation and yoga studio to stay focused on what is truly important in life. This is available to those who want to take advantage during and after their tenure. Call us for more information at 630.968.6800 or fill out an online application here.. Apply online today!

We look forward to hearing from you and for choosing USTA!

Clear Communication with your Therapist

Posted on: July 25th, 2017

We desire all of our clients receive the best services possible either from our massage therapy or aesthetics teams. When receiving treatment from a massage or an aesthetics therapist, clear communication — both verbal and non-verbal — is key to getting the effective experience you are seeking. Your communication begins before you begin relaxing at the table. These tips will help you receive the best service and create a wonderful relationship with your therapist.

Tips for Clear Communication with your Therapist

Pre-Appointment – Confirm all the details of the spa, such as the address and parking as well as the time slotted for your appointment; this way you are not feeling rushed before or after your appointment. Make sure your drink plenty of water at least 24 hours before the appointment so your skin and muscles are hydrated.

During the Appointment – Mention any recent illnesses, injuries, previous surgeries, bumps, cuts or herpes outbreaks. This will help the therapist handle you with care. Feel free to let the therapist know how previous treatments have gone for you or what you expect to gain from the service. If they ask you, “How are you feeling?” be as specific as possible with your answers so they can address any concerns. Answers like “Fine.” or “I feel bad.” aren’t very helpful to your therapist.

Immediately following the Service – Drink plenty of water and let your therapist know what you thought of the service, honestly. If you are ready, book a follow-up appointment and create a long term relationship with your therapist.

Post Appointment  – In order to receive the true benefits from massage and facials you need to feel comfortable and relaxed. This can truly happen when you develop a sense of trust and understanding with your therapist. Be honest and direct, truly listen, choose your words wisely, and remember to give details when sharing information about how you feel so your therapist is never guessing.

Your face and/or body will be grateful along with your mind because there will be no guesses when you are receiving your services, should you follow these tips. Here at USTA, we are always up to date with recent trends in aesthetics and massage therapy. We look forward to helping train and guide you into a successful career in either massage therapy or aesthetics. Pre and Post Facial Care

Posted on: July 19th, 2017

We desire better looking skin when we invest in a facial and there are ways that we can help our investment both before and after with the way we care for our skin. Some of us go to into our spa service thinking that moment is all our skin needs, however the pre and post care is vital to the facial benefits.

Pre and Post Facial Care Tips

Pre-Facial Do’s – Drink lots of water as this will hydrate your skin and prepare it for the facial. Keep with your normal skincare routine so your skin therapist can see how your skin is on the daily.

Pre-Facial Dont’s – Don’t drink too much alcohol a day or two before as this will dehydrate your skin and thin your blood vessels that may cause an irritation as the facial takes place. Try not to use skincare with retina or retinol within a three-day window as these products may cause an irritation with facial products. Don’t eat oily foods within a two-day period.

Post-Facial Do’s – Drink lots of water as that will continue to keep your skin hydrated. Stay out of the sun if possible for the remainder of the day.

Post- Facial Dont’s  – Try not to touch your face for the remainder of the day and not be tempted to irritate any acne that has been worked on by your therapist. Don’t take too hot of a shower or go into a spa/sauna for 72 hours. This will open the pores and may irritate your skin. Try not to wear much makeup if any at all for the rest of the day. Let your skin breathe and enjoy the natural glow!

Your skin will be delighted to receive the benefits of a facial service should you follow these tips. Here at USTA, we are always up to date with recent trends in aesthetics and massage therapy. We look forward to helping train and guide you into a successful career in either massage therapy or aesthetics. May your skin glow before and after your next facial!

Students Planning for Fall

Posted on: July 12th, 2017

As we are halfway through summer now, many of you may be wondering what your next chapter will be come fall. At USTA, registration is open for upcoming fall programs both in massage therapy or aesthetics. We thought it would be great to share some goal-setting tips as your next chapter will be unfolding next month!

Goal Setting Tips for Fall Programs/Semester

Organization – Begin organizing yourself both at home and life. This can be little things like cleaning out drawers and closets, meal plan your week, and planning weekly activities. You will set yourself up for success the fall should you have the details of life organized beforehand.

Finance – Goal setting in finance can begin with daily decisions like a Starbucks latte, super-sizing a meal, or buying a new pair of shoes. This will help you this fall as you take on the costs with becoming a student, and you’ll feel confident knowing how to set weekly and monthly money goals.

Time-Management – Time is one of the most important tools for students. As you prepare for fall, begin by planning your week out with daily to-do’s, weekly commitments and seeing the free-time available to plan fun time with friends. Your fall will go much smoother and you will have less chance of procrastination and stress. Developing good time-management skills will help you later in life.

S.M.A.R.T – (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Results-Focused, Time-Bound) An example of this is writing a new personal statement for yourself that you will be able to evaluate, review how it’s being achieved, with clear outcomes listed and timeframes. You’ll be able to use this type of goal-setting later with projects, work and many aspects of life.

Your body and mind will be set to begin this fall should you follow these goal-setting tips. Here at USTA, we look forward to helping train and guide you into a successful career in either massage therapy or aesthetics. To learn more, contact us at 630-968-6800, option 1 to speak with an admissions representative today.

We look forward to helping you succeed!

Relaxing During Your Massage

Posted on: July 6th, 2017

Many people are not able to relax both their bodies or their minds during their massage therapy. At USTA, all our students are given hands on experience in their curriculum to begin their massage therapy career with a holistic approach to massage. We thought we would share a few tips to take with you to your next massage treatment so it may be more relaxing and balanced!

Relaxing Tips for the Mind and Body During a Massage

Close your Eyes – When you close your eyes during your massage, it helps your mind slow down and not to be on alert mode.

Don’t Talk – Catch up with your therapist before you are given the few minutes to undress and prepare for treatment. While you are being treated, focus on a happy thought or imagine your body is a candle and slowly melting beginning with your head. Work through that image very slowly and your body should relax as the idea of muscles melting like a candle soothes the mind and tension within the body.

Deep Breathing – This is the best tip to benefit your body and your mind during a massage! Deep breathing will boost the flow of blood, lower your heart rate and blood pressure, increase the effectiveness of your lymphatic system, and detoxify your organs all while relieving stress. Begin a slow and steady deep breathing pattern.

Your body and mind will be both relaxed and balanced during your next massage treatment next time using three tips! Here at USTA, we are always up to date with recent trends in aesthetics and massage therapy. We look forward to helping train and guide you into a successful career in either massage therapy or aesthetics. To learn more, contact us at 630-968-6800, option 1 to speak with an admissions representative today.

Let your body and mind relax!

Aromatherapy and the Summer

Posted on: June 30th, 2017

As the temperatures and humidity go up, you may be wondering what you can do to bring your body heat down a notch. Essential oils are a huge trend and there are many ways they can help! At USTA, we expand the skillset of all our students with a clear understanding of aromatherapy with the safe and therapeutic uses of oils for clients. Students are taught how to make body care products for both personal and professional use. We thought we would share a couple of recipes for you to use this summer!

Aromatherapy Recipes for Summer

Cooling oils – Peppermint, Spearmint, Lemongrass and Eucalyptus

Carrier oils – Grapeseed, Sweet Almond, Coconut Oil (Fractionated)

Calming oils – Lavender, Geranium, Ylang Ylang

For massages on your feet, neck or back this summer, combine a few drops of the cooling oils with a carrier oil and you’ll be left both relaxed and cooled off for quite a while! The peppermint oil mix will be quite a refreshing reward to your feet at the end of the day.

For a mid-day cool down when you can’t make it to the pool, add a few drops of any cooling coil to a spray bottle filled with water and keep it in your refrigerator. Whenever your body calls for it, stop by your fridge, close your eyes and give your face and/or chest a quick spritz. You can also get a travel size spray bottle and add a couple drops of cooling oil along with a calming oil for sticky hot days you will be at the fair, or on a road trip.

Your body and mind will be both cooled and calmed from the heat this summer using these aromatherapy tips and recipes! Here at USTA, we are always up to date with popular trends in aesthetics and massage therapy. We look forward to helping train and guide you into a successful career in either massage therapy or aesthetics. Summertime with Eyelash Extensions

Posted on: June 18th, 2017

Eyelash extensions are one of the top recent beauty trends as they give your eyes more va-va-voom! Students in our aesthetics program are trained in eyelash extensions at no additional cost! It is very important to make sure you get your lashes done by a licensed esthetician as they will know the proper techniques to apply them.

Here are a few tips if you are considering getting your lashes extended and want to wake up to longer, thicker, fuller lashes.

TIPS FOR EYELASH EXTENSIONS DURING THE SUMMER

  • Avoid water for 24-48 hours – You’ll want to book your appointment in between trips to the pool as you’ll not want to be playing Marco Polo for a couple days. Avoid water you say? Does that mean just the pool? No. Try not to go to hot yoga, steam rooms, and hot showers.
  • Don’t pull on them – As they will take a couple days to get used to, you may have the temptation to tug at them. Try not to, as that will only loosen the glue and shift them.
  • Reshape them daily – Like your eyebrows, you’ll want to reshape your lashes with a light spoolie brush so they stay aligned and also to keep your natural lashes groomed.
  • Gentle facials – Since you won’t want to be tugging on your face near your eyes (and why would you want to anyway, it’s not good for our facial skin which is gentle and thin), you’ll want to clean your eyelids with either diluted baby shampoo daily or a soft oil-free facial cleanse wipe.
  • Avoid oil-based products near eyes – Oil-based products like water-proof mascara and certain eye creams are not recommended because they will also loosen the adhesives and your new look won’t last as long.

You’ll be ready for your fun and flirty new look by knowing what to expect and how to care for your eyelash extensions. Here at USTA, we are always up to date with popular trends in aesthetics and massage therapy. We look forward to helping train and guide you into a successful career in either massage therapy or aesthetics. Longer, thicker, fuller, lashes are so much more convenient now!

Maintain Summer Skin Glow

Posted on: June 9th, 2017

Even though you are preparing to show more skin this month with summer here, don’t forget that the face and the eyes are the first thing people are going to look at! You’ll want to take the time to have your skin ready for action this summer with these tips focusing on clarity, smoothness and most of all — glow!

4 SUMMER SKIN TIPS

  • EXFOLIATE – Exfoliation is crucial for your skin especially during the summer as it removes the dead skin cells and prevents backup, which then allows the moisturizers and water to hydrate your skin! You’ll want to exfoliate before applying a toner, moisturizer or any makeup and always add a cream with SPF afterward. We recommend the Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant Exfoliating Body Scrub!
  • APPLICATION – Most people think once is enough when applying moisturizer and sunscreen to the skin. During the summer you definitely want to re-apply every two hours. There are many types of sunscreen out on the market based on skin conditions and sensitivities. We recommend Dermalogica Oil Free Matte SPF30 or Super Sensitive Shield SPF30.
  • REPAIR AND TREAT – Should you run into problems with the sun burning your skin and notice brown spots, coarse skin, wrinkles, etc., you definitely will want to treat these as soon as possible. Load your skin with a hydrating skin cream that has age-fighting ingredients as these have collagen and will work to treat the burns or damage. We recommend the Dermalogica Power Rich line, Multi-Vitamin Power Recovery Masque, and MAP-15 Regenerator.
  • HYDRATE – The easiest thing you can do all summer is hydrate your skin, drinking tons of water. You can also keep your skin hydrated with weekly masques and toner spritz. These will rejuvenate the pores and work alongside the moisturizer. We recommend Dermalogica Antioxidant HydraMist and Skin Hydrating Masque.

We are happy to partner with Dermalogica and all of our clients receive the right Dermalogica product line based on their skin during their treatment. Here at USTA, we are always up to date with popular trends in aesthetics and massage therapy.  Our nationally accredited program has an upcoming start date for aesthetics on June 19, 2017! We look forward to helping train and guide you into a successful career in either massage therapy or aesthetics. To learn more, contact us at 630-968-6800, option 1 to speak with an admissions representative today!

May your skin glow this summer along with your smile!
